Olympic Silver Medalists Jason Richardson and Luguelín Santos to compete in Edmonton

April 30, 2013

Richardson to take on Andrew Riley of Jamaica

Edmonton...World Champion 110m hurdler Jason Richardson, of the USA, has confirmed his return for the Edmonton International Track Classic, taking on Jamaican hurdler Andrew Riley, who upset a strong field at the Drake Relays in Iowa, on April 26. Also making his Canadian debut is 400m sprinter, 2012 World Junior Champion Luguelín Santos of the Dominican Republic. The action happens at Foote Field Stadium on Saturday, June 29, between 10:30 -4:30 PM.

Jason Richardson, the reigning IAAF World Champion (2011) in the 110mH, has a personal best of 12.98, which he set in 2012. He then went on to win a silver medal at the London Olympic Games in 13.04. Richardson won first place at the Edmonton event last year with a time of 13.09. “After seeing Jason in London, there’s an excellent chance we’ll see a new record for the event in Canada,” says Peter Ogilvie, Meet Director and Executive Director of Athletics Alberta.

“I’m really excited to head back to Edmonton to defend my title,” says Richardson. “I’m sure they’re putting together a strong competitive field for this year. I’m ready.”

Andrew Riley defeated Olympic champion and World record-holder Aries Merritt on Friday, running 13.43 seconds into a strong 3.2 metres per second headwind to beat Merritt’s 13.48.

Luguelín Santos is the youngest 400m Olympic medalist in history, having won silver at the London Olympic Games at the age of 18 with a time of 44.45. He also won at the Drake Relays on Friday night, running his season opener in 44.74 seconds, nearly a second faster than 2nd place, and in windy and cold conditions. That time is now the second-fastest of 2013.

“I’m ready to keep the momentum going,” says Santos. “My goal is to set the Canadian record for the fastest 400m.” The record of 44.64 was set in Edmonton at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics in 2001 by Avard Moncur of the Bahamas.

“Jason, Andrew and Luguelín are three outstanding 2012 Olympians that we’re thrilled to announce,” says Ogilvie, “but we’ve only just begun to reveal our line-up.”

Richardson, Riley, and Santos, along with many other World Champions and Olympic medalists, will meet at Foote Field Stadium on June 29 for the third of five stops in the 2013 National Track League series. The Edmonton International Track Classic gives athletes an opportunity to compete in Canada against some of the best in the world.

For Canadians, the Edmonton International Track Classic is an opportunity to witness and support Canadian athletes in their quest for success at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics in Moscow, Russia, August 10-18. The Edmonton International Track Classic is part of the Edmonton International Athletics Festival, June 22-29, with events held at locations throughout Edmonton.
